To maintain Real Club de Golf Las Brisas in the best possible condition all year round, it is necessary to do regular maintenance to ensure the best condition of our grass. The maintenance programme for our fairways and roughs is at the same level as some of the world´s most prestigious golf courses.
The beginning of July is the best time to undertake maintenance works for the fairways and roughs, while the bermuda is fully growing. This also coincides with our low playing season
Performing all of this maintenance work with our own team requires an excessive amount of time and resources
Therefore, we work with Tinegolf, a maintenance company specialized in this type of job, which will allow the necessary work to be done in a short amount of time
We take advantage of the course being closed to carry out other work on greens and tees, sodding projects, tree pruning, tree planting and other special projects
WORK ON GREENS & TEES
Verticut to reduce thatch and provide a firm surface.
According to auditors recommendations for greens, a slicer that fills the hole with sand at once was used for the first time to improve infiltration and organic matter content in the soil.
Cleaning debris after slicing topdressing with sand.
Solid aeration in the entire area with 15 mm tines and a 9 cm depth.
Brush, blowers and rollers as needed to clean the playing surface
These allow a rapid recovery of the playing surface, reaching speeds of 10 feet in 10 days.
Work on Tees
Work on Greenes
WORK ON FAIRWAYS AND ROUGHS
Verticut is done in order to reduce thatch and promote vertical growth of the grass and a firm playing surface
Solid aeration of the area with 19mm tines and a 17cm depth
Hollow aeration of the back nine roughs that haven’t got sandy soil with 19mm tines and a 15cm depth. This will relieve compaction and allow flow of oxygen and water to the root zone
Topdressing with sand, using a total of 54 trucks of 28 tons each
Cleaning of debris from verticut and aeration
Brush and blowers to work sand into the holes and grass
Fertilizer application to promote recovery
Work on Fairways
PATCHING WITH TURF
Last floods left on some fairways and roughs a layer of several millimetres of mud that sealed the root zone, blocking the flow of oxygen and water, and reducing drainage
In these areas, mainly in the lower spots, this layer has been removed and replaced with turf from our nursery
BERMUDA ENCROACHMENT ON TEES AND COLLARS
As in other maintenance weeks, we keep installing a plastic barrier around tees and collars to slow down bermuda encroachment. Contaminated turf is removed
This month works were carried out in 10th tees.
NEW TREE PLANTING
According to a reforestation program defined with our golf architect Kyle Phillips, 46 new trees were planted including these species:
Washingtonian palm tree: 9 und.
Peppertree: 13 und.
Olive tree: 24 und.
TREE PRUNING
To minimize risk, when the course is closed dead trees or unhealthy specimens are cut down. This is done following recommendations from our certified arborist according to our short-term programme.
REVISIÓN DE BUNKERS
Regular check of bunker sand depth is carried out
Recycled water used for irrigation contaminates the upper layer of the sand. In the more affected areas this layer is cleaned and replaced with new sand if necessary
Finally, debris from aeration is removed and bunkers are prepared for play.
Last year we have identified few bunkers lacking good drainage due to failure on the capillary concrete system
Two bunkers in holes 2 and 9 were repaired by installer at no cost; a second one in hole 2 still needs a major restauration in a near future.
LAKE CLEANING
Some pools along the Benabola creek build up mud and debris over time. As the course is closed some of them were cleaned out.
WORKS AT CREEK ON HOLE 12TH
The townhall has installed an elbow hardware in a drainage outlet to easy evacuation in case of flood.
OTHER WORKS
This week allows us to carry out some jobs difficult to do when the course is open
Steep areas with grass (bunkers, slopes) tend to build up thatch. For this reason, they need an annual aggressive cut.
Bridge at 17th was repaired and painted.
Irrigation system, including sprinklers, filters and nozzles are checked and cleaned.
